Writing

Write routine documents with accurate punctuation, spelling and sentence structure. These should include creative material and work related reports, electronic correspondence, forms, letters, memos and minutes.

INTRODUCTION TO WRITING

1.    Download and read the presentation Writing Better.  Discuss it in your group.

2.    Watch the short video of Steven Pinker -  Literally. Discuss this in your group.  How should we mind which words we use when writing or talking?

3.  Simplify the sentences in your Workbook.  Work in pairs or a group.

There is a website which may help you with simplifying sentences.  You can try it out below:

A.    EXPRESSIVE OR CREATIVE WRITING

1. You need to write two pieces of personal expressive or creative writing, for example, a story, autobiography, speech, opinion piece, poetry or reflective writing.

2. To help you decide what forms of creative writing you would like to explore, complete a mindmap in your Workbook or create one online.

Choose a general topic you are interested in.  There is an example of a mindmap showing the theme of living in the countryside or a small village.

B. FORMAL WRITING

You must produce all of the following: A work-related report, forms, memos and minutes.

Writing a Memo

1.    Answer the question in your Workbook.


2.    Read Tips for Writing a Memo.  


3.    Read the basic memo in your Workbook and highlight the key features of a memo.


4.    Download a Memo Template below and write a Memo.  You can link the topic of the Memo to your Group Project.

5. Include your drafts, redrafts and the final memo version in your portfolio.

Filling in Forms

Form filling is a common task in our everyday lives. Below are some forms we fill in.

1. In your workbook, read the tips for filling in forms.

2.  Download the online form below.  Fill it in using an application like Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

​

3.  Print the completed form or save the online form in your folder on the computer. 


4.    Fill in the form in your Workbook.

Meeting Agenda & Minutes of a Meeting

​

1. Read some points on how to write an agenda for a meeting. 

​

2. Write your own agenda.  You can write an agenda for a meeting of your choice or you can link your agenda to your Group Project. 

 

3. Once you have taken part in your group meeting, write up the minutes.   You can click through a slideshow to get an idea on how to write up your minutes.

2. Write your own report.  You can use the template below - check with your tutor.    The template will open in Microsoft Word.

C. A FORMAL LETTER

1.  Do some research online on how to write a formal letter.

2. If you have time, write the features of a formal letter on this online noticeboard.  Work in pairs if you can.
